1. Reusable bags

It seems like an obvious tip, but the truth is that there are still many people who haven’t adopted this practice. The use of plastic bags is not only harmful to the environment but also to your wallet, as you have to pay for them with every purchase. Even if you reuse them for the next purchases, they wear out quickly.

To protect the oceans and the environment as a whole, opt for tote bags, for example. Not only do they have a much larger lifestyle, but when they wear out, they can be reused for several purposes (and they can be very fancy!). From using the scraps for other items, you can dispose of your tote bags in a home textile recycling bin.

One tip is to buy or make your own tote bags and leave them in the handbags you must use for shopping or near your shopping list. This way, you are sure you will remember your eco-bags.

2. Eco-friendly necessaries

When you are packing your luggage, organizing your shoes, toiletries, and even dirty clothes can be a mess. Instead of storing these items in plastic bags, organize them in necessaires.

Suppose you are one of those people with everything they need in their handbag. In that case, necessaires are also an excellent option to organize it. If you have already made a purchase at THON, you can reuse our sustainable packaging and pack your items.

Try to ensure that they have been produced from environmentally friendly sources. If they are made of fabric, make sure they are OEKO-TEX® certified. So that you can be certain that your garment is protecting the environment and everyone who comes into contact with it.

3. Sustainable home textiles

Try to think in the simplest things: bed and bath linen, items your skin comes into contact with daily. Star by reducing your carbon footprint with sustainable bedding, for example. By picking eco-friendly linens, you are also protecting yourself from toxic substances, which may be present at some point in the production process.

In addition to sustainable bath and bed linen, make sure you also use eco-conscious kitchen towels, robes, and rugs. These products usually have a longer lifespan, which makes them an investment.

At THON, we ensure that all our products are environmentally friendly. They are OEKO-TEX® certified and crafted from also certified and eco-friendly qualities such as TENCEL™ Lyocell and Egyptian Cotton™.

4. Fair trade

Eliminating the purchase of clothes in the fast fashion industry may be difficult. Still, the truth is that the production and shipping of these chains are highly polluting. Therefore, reducing the purchase of items in these stores is a big step.

Supporting the growth of local businesses is a great way to avoid buying clothes from fast fashion chains. Remember that although local stores usually charge higher prices, usually their pieces are crafted from prestigious textiles. This makes them last longer and lets your skin breathe. In addition, these companies typically pay fair prices for the production of their products.

5. Cotton buds, reusable wipes and washcloths

In our daily routine, we must take care of our skin. Cleansing well and removing makeup are two essential steps. However, at these moments, we sometimes use a lot of disposable cotton pads, which represents a substantial environmental impact, given the excess water needed to produce the pads. To overcome this, do your routines with reusable wipes or washcloths.

Another product used in our hygiene and makeup routine is cotton hubs. But the truth is that besides the excessive waste of water, this product also uses plastic or cardboard, which is generally not recyclable. To cope with this, it's possible to replace the traditional cotton swabs with reusable ones, for example, from silicone and wood.

6. Shampoo and conditioner bar

Some people find it strange to apply, but believe, when you find your shampoo bar, your hair routine will take a glow. They usually last longer than conventional ones, on average 3 months if applied twice a week.

Beyond their durability, these shampoos and conditioners are surprisingly light on the hair. And we can't fail to mention one thing: they are much easier to carry around. No more spills when traveling and no more checking millimeters on airlines. Amazing, isn't it?

7. Sustainable deodorant

Plenty of options exist to combat the amount of plastic in a deodorant. Look for products with ecological packaging made from cork, metal, or sugar cane. After this, you must determine what works best for you and your skin. These deodorants are usually free from alcohol and aluminium, perfect for sensitive skin.

8. Toothpaste tablet and sustainable toothbrush

It may sound strange, but toothpaste tablet is a solution to avoid toothpaste and plastic waste. Plus, it's fantastic for taking on the go! It allows you to take only the number of tablets you need.

The toothbrush can also play an active role in a more sustainable lifestyle. When your toothbrush reaches the end of its life, you can replace it with a brush with removable bristles or an electric one where you only have to change the bristles. These brushes end up having a much longer lifespan, which makes them an affordable option.

9. Menstrual cup and other alternatives

Menstruation is a natural and biological process that requires a more careful hygiene routine. However, replacing conventional pads and tampons can make the menstrual cycle more sustainable.

The first alternative is the menstrual cup. A product that requires a significant initial investment but, if properly cared for, can last up to 10 years. Therefore, this product turns out to be a good investment. As each woman is different, the brands that sell these products usually develop at least two sizes. You should choose your taking into account your flow.

You can use reusable pads if you are not a fan of menstrual cups. It is essential to take care of them correctly so they last as long as possible. One of the care to be taken is to wash them at 30º/40º, not use softener, and not iron or dry clean.

Finally, you can also go for period briefs. This is a standard pair of underwear with a built-in absorbent, giving you as much comfort as possible.

10. Reusable water bottle

Forget the typical plastic bottles. Not only are they bad for the environment and your health from the harmful chemicals released. Replace the traditional plastic bottle with a reusable bottle.

For example, a reusable stainless steel bottle is much more durable and convenient to carry. In addition, these bottles usually have thermal properties, allowing you to store your hot and cold drinks for hours. This is a simple and cost-effective tip, as a bottle like this can last for years.

11. Carbon offset

Carbon offsetting is a way to reduce or eliminate your carbon emissions. Generally speaking, you can buy carbon offsets from companies committed to supporting projects that rescue and avoid these emissions. You can make this purchase every time you fly, for example.

In addition, by replacing your appliances with more efficient ones, your light lamps with LED ones, and installing solar panels, you are also making your carbon offset.

At THON, we prioritize local and conscious production. We crafted our linens in Guimarães, in small batches, and through customization services. Besides, we produce through a circular economy and the philosophy of upcycling, where we give a new life to the surpluses of our collections. With them, we wove our packaging and laundry bags. We seek to innovate and promote circular solutions that combat mass production and textile waste.

In addition, our products are developed to last over time. Our colors are timeless, and all our collections are inspired by the principles of Nordic design, where simplicity, functionality, elegance, appreciation of what is handmade and slow production stand out.

Our carbon offsetting comes into play here by allowing our customers to make a conscious and sustainable choice and thus compensate for their emissions. We want to contribute to more balanced and ecological homes.

Every day we work hard to ensure that the emissions from your favorite THON products are lower than those from pieces produced outside the European Union. Being local also means reducing the distance our products travel to reach you, reducing climate impact.

The important thing is to adopt the habits that best fit your lifestyle. The goal is not to discard all the products you have at home for ecological and organic products but to replace them sustainably at the end of their life cycle.

After our tips, do you already feel like going beyond the 3 R's (reduce, reuse, and recycle)? Environmental sustainability is in the hands of all of us. Only small steps are needed to reduce our emissions. Do you know any other tips to implement in an eco-friendly lifestyle? Let's hear about it in the comments.
