Conditions such as cold weather, lighting, noises, and other factors may well mess up your sleep, but have you ever slept on sheets that don’t perfectly fit the mattress? If your sheets are not correctly fitted, your sleep will most certainly be uncomfortable, so you shouldn’t underestimate the importance of bedding sizes!

Take note! Whether you’re selecting a new bed frame or bed linens, there are several attributes to consider, ranging from the size of your mattress to your home decor. We have gathered tips to take the hassle out of selecting the appropriate size for your bed sheets.

1. Bed size guide from our experts at THON

Aside from the mattress, a bed frame is often the main element that determines the structure of the whole room and is critical in choosing sheet sizes, comforters, and everything in between. Below is a quick guide to the most popular bedding sizes and some tips to keep in mind according to your bed headboard and mattress.

European Single Bed: 90 x 200 cm
This bed is designed for kids, teens, guest rooms, and overall smaller spaces without taking up much floor space. In Europe, single bed dimensions are 90 cm x 200 cm. In the United Kingdom, dimensions are 90 cm x 190 cm.

European Double Bed: 140 x 200 cm
Ideal for two people or those who love a bit more space to sleep alone, the standard European double bed is 140 cm x 200 cm, while it’s 135 cm x 190 cm in the UK. Double-sized mattresses are also a great option for your guest room.

European King Bed: 160 x 200 cm
The king bed size is the most recommended bed if you sleep with a partner. The standard European king-size bed is usually 160 cm x 200 cm, whereas the UK’s dimensions are 150 cm x 200 cm. Besides being a spacious and comfortable bed, you can easily find bedding sets and sheets for a king-size bed.

European Super King Bed: 180 x 200 cm
In this type of bed, there’s space for everyone! Usually measuring 180 cm x 200 cm, it’s a glorious bed to share not only with your other half (without getting all upset about the lack of space) but also with your pets, if you feel like it.

2. The most appropriate linens for each bed

Now that you have selected the basics, it’s time to pick or renew the bed linen that goes along. With the variety of options available in the market, it's only natural to feel overwhelmed and unsure of what is best. That is why we have prepared a straight-to-the-point guide for finding linens that effortlessly fit your mattress.

Firstly, always check the bedding size chart! Additionally, different double bed sheet sizes may fit a number of mattresses with various heights. Finally, you may find different sizes within the same category, so pay close attention to our notes on a few types of bedding.

Fitted Sheet

As the saying goes, you can't build a great building on a weak foundation. As a general rule, fitted sheets are a must-have for protecting your mattress and providing you with an extra layer of comfort. On top of that, they offer a tight, polished look to your bed, given their rubber bands snugly placed on the edges underneath the mattress.

On the one hand, if the fitted sheet is too small, you’ll have to struggle to stretch it out, forcing it to fit under the mattress, which can damage both the fabric and its rubber bands. On the other hand, if it’s bigger than the mattress, you’re likely to wake up with it out of place or even tumbling to the floor of the bed. We advise you to measure your mattress's width, length, and height. Be sure to include the mattress topper, if applicable.

Flat Sheet

If you like layering, this sheet is for you. Also known as a top sheet, the flat sheets is suitable for anyone who wants an extra comfort level or prefers not to have their duvet or blanket directly on top.

Unlike the fitted sheet, this one must be larger than the mattress to attach properly underneath it, as there are no rubber bands at its edges. However, beware, the flat sheet shouldn’t be enormously larger than the mattress. Otherwise, it might wrinkle, and you’ll probably have to adjust it over and over again.

A sure-fire tip for choosing this sheet size is to remember that the fabric centimeters that fall between the floor and mattress should be added to the sheet dimensions as well. We suggest adding around 35 cm to each side. For instance, for a 160 cm x 200 cm mattress, we recommend a 240 cm x 270 cm sized flat sheet.

Duvet and Duvet Covers

There aren’t strict rules to follow here: everything depends on your preferences and the height of the bed. Still, choosing the right duvet or comforter can be tricky. Ultimately, your imagination and taste will determine your choice.

If you like to cuddle up in fluffiness, then go for a larger-sized duvet. Remember to follow the same direction for the duvet cover that will fill it. In order to keep your bedroom elegant and harmonious, we recommend a 23 to 45-cm width, which should be wider on each side of the mattress. As far as the length is concerned, try a duvet the same length as the mattress. Yet, if you prefer, add an extra 5 to 20 cm.

The duvet cover is essential to increase the duvet’s lifetime, protecting it against body oils, sweat, and stains that tend to appear over time. Given its easy maintenance, the duvet cover is easily washed, keeping the bedding clean and free from bacteria and dust mites. Lastly, it’s good to point out that duvet covers are often the star of bedroom decor.
