Discover the process that brings life to our bedding and bath linens, from fiber harvesting to design. With sustainability in mind, understand why we take immense pride in our eco-friendly production.
The textile industry is often associated with climate-related issues such as river pollution, CO₂ emissions, or the depletion of forests and other natural resources. Keeping this in mind, we've elevated our mission at THON: delivering inspiring bed and bath linen without harming our home – the Planet.
Straight from Guimarães, at the heart of European textile culture, with a keen focus on all social and environmental aspects, we ensure fair working conditions for our artisans, as we kindly call them. However, our commitment to sustainability begins even before this!
To do this, we only rely on suppliers certified by leading organizations who share our values and adhere to the highest quality and sustainability standards. From the selection of our fibers to the crafting of each piece, explore our entire production process.
Egyptian Cotton™
Originating in the fertile soil of the Nile River and thriving due to the richness of its climate, this fiber stands out for its extra-long length, resulting in exceptionally soft and durable pieces. Beyond Egypt's remarkable climate, the Egyptian Cotton™ flower is meticulously handpicked, preventing the fiber from breaking. These conditions ensure the unique touch of our bedding and bath essentials.
These features make Egyptian Cotton™ fiber truly rare and luxurious. To guarantee the authenticity of your pieces, ensure that they are registered under the Cotton Egypt Association using the certification number and seal, like the one on THON's labels. This way, you also ensure fiber traceability and purity.
To assure the sustainability of our process, all THON pieces are OEKO-TEX® certified. This certification confirms that all our products are free from harmful substances substances in their composition and production process. This commitment guarantees your safety, the well-being of our artisans, and the Planet's health.
Organic Cotton
By now, you're probably wondering what the difference is between Egyptian Cotton™ and Organic Cotton. The truth is that from its origin to the final product, these fibers have a lot of differences.
To reinforce our commitment to sustainability, we've crafted the Lusorganic collection, sourced directly from Organic Cotton. This collection stands out for its reduced environmental impact.
Every stage is meticulously audited, from harvesting the flower to ginning, where the pure Cotton is separated from the seeds and other natural materials. Once filtered, the Cotton is spun to form the yarn. Afterward, we move to weaving. At THON, pieces made of Organic Cotton are woven using the traditional structure of a vertical thread over a horizontal one. This thread-weaving technique gives rise to the Percale fabric.
This collection is known for its naturally washed appearance and the relaxed yet sophisticated look without the need for ironing. The bedding is available in three classic colors – White, Pale Pine, and Silent Gray – achieved through dyeing by certified suppliers, ensuring a more eco-friendly process post-cutting and crafting. Throughout the entire process, THON guarantees high energy efficiency and water reuse.
Apart from its OEKO-TEX® certification, this collection also holds the GOTS certification, ensuring products are 100% organic. Renowned for its stringent standards, it guarantees that every stage of the process is free from genetically modified organisms (GMO) to safeguard the purity of the fiber. Thus, we ensure all components involved in intermediate stages, such as dyeing, comply with the conditions of this certification.
This collection elevates our commitment to Mother Nature through our on-demand production. This approach ensures that we only produce the quantities ordered. This way, we avoid overproduction and waste, appealing to a conscious and eco-friendly purchase.
TENCEL™ Lyocell
Known for its unparalleled softness and comfort, TENCEL™ Lyocell stands out because of its origin. Unlike Cotton, this fiber originates from wood pulp sourced from forests managed and certified by international non-profit organizations like FSC and PEFC. These organizations set rigorous sustainability standards, guaranteeing chemical-free tree growth and regulated wood extraction. This way, we ensure soil and forest protection by refusing deforestation.
Wood chips are transformed into cellulose through an organic solution, using 100% of the wood. Next is the extrusion phase, where cellulose gives life to an incredibly delicate fiber akin to a cloud. Finally, spinning and weaving processes take place. This Lenzing-certified, highly resource-efficient process certified by Lenzing results in breathable, absorbent bedding with a silky finish.
At THON, upcycling takes center stage across our production chain. The crafting of our pieces is meticulously planned, utilizing surplus materials from our collections to craft the fabric packaging and laundry bags that store our products. Amazing, isn't it? These bags are included free of charge with every order to reduce textile waste. Moreover, all our labels and accessories are crafted from certified and recycled materials.
We firmly believe that sustainability and comfort can and should go hand in hand. Our journey towards sustainable production proves just that! What did you think of our production process? If you've already purchased sustainable bedding, we'd love to hear your thoughts on its touch.
