How Can Sateen Improve Your Skin & Hair?

Posted by The Home of Nature on

Indeed, you’ve heard about the benefits of Sateen for your skin, but especially for your hair. But where does this fabric come from, and why is it so wonderful?

If you’ve ever looked for tips to keep your hair and skin glowing, surely you’ve heard of Sateen pillowcases. Even many dermatologists have surrendered to this type of pillowcases and bedding. They certainly work some magic.

The truth is that Sateen and Satin actually share the same weave but are made from different fibers. Satin is made from long filaments is used in many products, such as shirts, pajamas, lingerie, ties, and even ballet shoes, while Sateen is ideal for bedding. Usually, bed linen is woven from the finest yarns derived from the best fibers: TENCEL™ Lyocell and Egyptian Cotton™. In contrast, the other products mentioned are typically crafted from Silk, Polyester, Rayon, or even short-staple Conventional Cotton.

The benefits of Sateen...

Let’s start with the essence: Sateen bedding. Before you buy your Sateen sheets, it’s better to consider this fabric's pros and cons. But honestly, there’s not much to it.

At THON, as we prioritize high-quality fibers, Sateen stands out for its durability and resistance to time. As they don't require demanding maintenance, Sateen home textiles are durable and can even be handed down from generation to generation. Our main recommendation is to wash your garments in cold water and dry them in the shade. High temperatures can damage Sateen. However, if a luxurious, smooth look, you can iron your Sateen lightly or give it a little steam.

When you think about Sateen, its soft touch and shine certainly come to mind. The extra-long fibers of Egyptian Cotton™ and TENCEL™ Lyocell provide the enjoyable and luxurious sensations that are so characteristic of Sateen.

Sateen is also known for being a breathable and porous fabric. These characteristics facilitate airflow, maintaining a pleasant body temperature. The porosity of this fabric also means that it dries faster and doesn't accumulate moisture. These properties make Sateen hypoallergenic, great for those with allergies and sensitive skin. This is because Sateen naturally repels moisture and odors, the ideal environment for the proliferation of bacteria and dust mites.

But beware, Sateen’s properties are not so linear! For example, if your Sateen is made from Conventional Cotton and even though it’s soft and silky, it may not offer the same benefits for your hair and skin. Unlike Egyptian Cotton™ our TENCEL™ Lyocell, this fiber soaks up your hair’s natural oils and skin’s moisture. This can leave your skin dehydrated and your hair dry and brittle. On the other hand, Silk, TENCEL™ Lyocell, or Egyptian Cotton™ Sateen is highly demanded for its moisture retention capacity.

Can you imagine washing your bed linen, and once it’s dry, you can put it to bed straight away, even without ironing it? Sounds like a dream, doesn’t it? But its silky texture makes it wrinkle-resistant, which simplifies its maintenance.

At this point, you’re probably wondering about the cons of Sateen. The fabric’s stitch is more closed, so it may not be comfortable for hot sleepers, even though it naturally regulates body temperature. For these, we’ve developed our Percale bedding, which is just as incredible but cooler.

Another not-so-positive point is that it’s easy to create pulls, especially if you are a cat lover. Their meticulous nails can quickly snap threads from your duvet cover and bed sheets.

…for your hair

All the properties we’ve seen of Sateen result in countless advantages for your hair. The fact is that pillowcases, if they’re not high-quality, can take the shine off your hair and even damage it. To ensure the vitality of your scalp, opt for a good Sateen pillowcase and start enjoying its benefits now.

1. Anti-oil. You produce oil on your scalp when the sebaceous glands are stimulated, for example, through friction. Sateen’s silky-soft touch means no friction between the hair and the pillowcase, thus preventing oil production.

2. Anti-frizz. There’s nothing more annoying than washing your hair and waking up to static electricity. This is due to friction between the hair and the pillowcase. As Sateen reduces the friction, you can say goodbye to bad hair days.

3. Anti-breakage hair loss. As we’ve already seen, friction and rubbing are enemies of our hair. Sleeping on a rough surface or with your hair tied up causes it to fall out and break. Reverse this and split ends with the right pillowcase, and stop sleeping with your hair tied up.

Just like for your hair, Sateen pillowcases can work miracles for your eyelashes and eyebrows. As we’ve already seen, Sateen doesn’t absorb moisture, so it doesn’t “steal” the essential oils from the toots of your lashes and eyebrows. This makes them grow healthier and stronger.

Finally, as Sateen pillowcases apply less pressure to your hair, they help to maintain your finish. So don’t worry about the beautiful waves you made in the morning, they’ll still look amazing after your sleep.

…for your skin

Skin isn’t left out of the game, either. Unlike other fabrics, Sateen can give your skin a new lease of life. Check out the wonders it can do for you with our Sateen bedding.

1. Moisturizing and shine. Depending on the fiber, Sateen is excellent because it doesn’t absorb moisture. This property is the key to ensuring that your creams and serums aren’t absorbed into the pillowcase, as is often the case with other fabrics. This will maximize its hydration. Note that Conventional Cotton Sateen retains moisture, so it can create stains on your pillowcases.

2. Reduces wrinkles. Sateen’s silky surface decreases friction on your skin, which can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and expression lines.

3. Reduces irritation. Sateen’s extremely soft touch reduces friction between the skin and the pillowcase. This is perfect for those who have sensitive skin and are prone to acne and allergies.

Sateen can be amazing, can’t it? But be careful not to buy counterfeit or low-quality versions. It’s very common to find Sateen woven from impure or toxic fibers. At THON, all our products are OEKO-TEX® certified, guaranteeing your safety, that of the planet, and that of our artisans. To maximize these benefits, one last tip: always prioritize pure Sateen without elastane.

How did we come to our Sateen?

White and green Sateen fabrics from TENCEL™ Lyocell before cutting and sewing.

Sateen is a weaving technique, not a fiber. That’s why, to get our luxurious Sateen, we go through several processes, always regulated by external entities, to guarantee that our artisans and the planet are respected. Afterward, our products undergo rigorous testing to ensure they are safe and meet all your needs.

At THON, we aim to elevate your dreams and comfort, so we start by selecting the best, certified fibers. We’ve made sure to choose extra-long and strong fibers from hand-picked Egyptian Cotton™ and the best that TENCEL™ Lyocell has to offer with its botanical origin.

After choosing the fibers, our artisans dedicate themselves to creating unique garments addressed to your most intimate needs and personal preferences. Throughout our production process, all activities are regulated, following the criteria of each certification.

Our Egyptian Cotton™ is stored in a dedicated, properly identified area. This methodology enables a more careful handling of the fiber to reduce the contamination risk. Then, in the cutting area, the fabric is also stored to ensure its traceability.

The batches are then labeled and sent to our artisans. In an area reserved for Egyptian Cotton™, their “golden hands” give life to THON’s unique and exclusive garments.

To make sure you’re buying bed linen that complies with the strictest environmental and safety regulations, ensure it’s OEKO-TEX® certified. This certification guarantees that your garments are free of harmful substances for you, the producers, and the planet. It also ensures that all safety requirements for our producers are met.

Sateen is a magical fabric that can transform your skin care or hair care routine. The secret? It lies in choosing the best fibers and the careful processes they undergo. So remember to always buy your items from certified brands that adhere to the highest sustainability and safety standards.
